The eierbal is a popular snack in the North and East of the Netherlands. There, the eierbal can be obtained from vending machines, snack bars and cafeterias. Outside of those regions, the eierbal is hardly known. The first eierbals were fried in Groningen in the early 1950s. It is likely that the eierbal is based on the Scotch egg, which is almost identical and several centuries older.

An eierbal consists of a whole or half peeled, hard-boiled egg in ragout. The ball is breaded and fried. A variation on this is the friet-ei, where the egg soaked in ragout is sometimes chopped into pieces before being rolled into a ball through the breadcrumbs. This friet-ei can be found in the eastern and southern Netherlands, among other places.

Indonesian cuisine has a dish that is somewhat similar to this (sambal telur). Another egg dish, where an egg is processed in a meatball, is a bird's nest.

The largest egg ball in the world was fried on June 24, 2015 at snack bar Friet van Piet by a number of Groningen students. An ostrich egg was used for this. The circumference of the largest egg ball was 44 cm.

One thing is certain: in the early 1950s, the eierbal made its advance in the North. The Sloots family is often credited with being the 'inventor' of the snack. But Sloots Automatiek was not the only one selling the snack in the 1950s. The vending machine of Cafetaria Succes on the Carolieweg also had the eierbal in its range. Sloots, then located in the Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat, was the first to advertise the snack in Nieuwsblad van het Noorden on 23 January 1951.
